So much tradition and history behind the Moroccan Wedding Blanket!
In the past, from a young age, a girl’s mother would begin weaving a blanket out of untreated, un-dyed wool, completing the project’s finer details in the lead up to her daughter’s wedding day. The sequins are added not only for decorative purposes, but for a warming effect. During the day, they catch the sunlight, and in the evenings they reflect the light coming from a chimney, warming any space. The girl grows up knowing this beautifully woven blanket is a symbol of her future life and duties as a bride. On her wedding day she is wrapped in this gorgeous weaving as a symbol of her gift, and carried atop a donkey to her future husband’s home. According to tradition, the future bride should not touch any ground until she reaches her new home! The wedding blanket is part of the daughter’s family dowry.
Today, these Handira are quite sought after, so much so that women have revived the weaving tradition to sell contemporary versions on the markets. Some women are even selling their own vintage blankets for a pretty penny; one must be careful in purchasing these, however, as fakery abounds. (I have a beautiful vintage Handira that I wouldn’t dare put anywhere but on the wall😊) In the Western world, designers and amateurs alike have taken a serious liking to these blankets, using them as wall hangings, or laying them on the edges of their beds.
Because not many women these days are riding through the mountains on donkeys to their new home, designers are breaking all the rules by putting them down as rugs! Other repurposing trends are taking off too. Turning them into pillows (such as those we offer) a few pieces can be made from one blanket. Low stools or beanbag-type floor seating is another favourite!
We import the newly made versions of these blankets, and the ones we carry are good quality sourced directly from Morocco and very attractive.
They are an amazing addition to anyone’s decor, modern or vintage.
